Pad to Pow- New Year Resolution

Menstruation is still a common myth in our society, especially in rural areas. Still, women have to live away from home for 4-6 six days. They cannot touch, cook, roam and feel the freedom. That results in isolation of a community in three genders, man, women, and women during periods. Well, I accepted such a solitary act until I felt it’s a regular, normal process that will occur every month. It is not a sign of sickness but it’s a sign of maturity and ability to give continuity to the generation.

Everybody knows, without menstruation human generation will no longer exist but still, people treat as if it is a curse- not a boon. Initially, when I was a teenager, I used to wear clothes as a soaking instrument. But the problem was I had to change them thrice a day because the bleeding is excessive during initial days of periods. This definitely was a total waste of time and also the uncomfortableness was there. One day, I knew about the Pad that is comfortable and doesn’t have to change thrice a day. Well, it really was a blessing for people like us.

Finally, my periods saw the revolution and it was far easier to survive those 4-6 days. But wearing pad wasn’t so easy as it looks because the initial step is so hard to tolerate i.e buying. Obviously, buying goods is the only exchange of currency but in this case, we got pervert emotions in return of cash. One day, I went to the pharmacy to buy a sanitary pad. A long-haired yet filthy guy was on the counter. I whispered to request him for a pad sliding Rs 100 on the counter. What? “he replied although he knew what I am talking about”. A boy of around 20 years old was sitting beside him.

The pharmacist wanted to create that moments to chuckle and both of them murmured and passed the pad wrapped in the newspaper. The look in their eyes showed that I am not a normal costumer. What they thought was the girl who can buy pads openly, maybe she is open for the sex as well. They took it as a signal. I had to get back with a lot of frustration and embarrassment along with pads. Back home and sat on the couch. I thought, there is no signal of sex when a boy buys a condom. They are free to buy it even the pharmacist is a boy or girl. If Girl,  It’s her again who had to sell condoms with embarrassment. In any way, man dominates the emotion.

After I arrived in Kathmandu for Higher studies, I had to face the same for a year. I tried a lot to overcome the scenario but wasn’t able to. So, this year I said to myself ‘’ I have to be strong and determined, I am not the only to face such embarrassments”. So, I thought I will make myself so strong that, if somebody repeats the same, I will not hesitate to reply with stony words and a punch making the crunchy sound ‘pow’. This year I won’t tolerate such harassment and humiliation, and I will try to encourage other ladies to stand strong. We need to transform our self from “Pad to Pow”.

(NOTE- NOT EVERY BOY IS SAME, THIS IS FOR THOSE WHO HAS PERVERT EMOTIONS AND TAKES EVERYTHING AS A SIGNAL. WE HAVE FACED A LOT IN MICROBUS, FAIR, PUBLIC PLACES AND IN OFFICES. SO, SAY NO TO WOMEN HARASSMENT)
